Understanding Ray Brown Impact Seat Belt Labels
Aktie
Impact seat belts were often seen in the mid 60's in competition cars. The belts were used on various competition cars including Cobras, Shelby Mustangs and others.
The belts were originally made by Ray Brown Automotive/American Safety and there was some slight variation in the design of this label. Ray was a car racing fanatic, and started producing aircraft style seat belts in the early 1950s. His business quickly became the largest seat belt manufacturer in the USA at a time when safety belts in racing were generally frowned upon, fire being the most feared issue at the time. Sadly the business no longer exists in the original form.
Production and design varied slightly but the belts were typically sewn onto the harness lap belts around an inch back from the buckle hardware stitching. The stitching was pretty crudely done on original cars, often 2 lines of what appeared to be hand stitching.
